Dr Liarakos is a cornea and anterior segment surgeon with high specialization in modern keratoplasty techniques and extensive international experience. He graduated the Military Medical Academy and accomplished his Doctorate Thesis (PhD diploma) at the University of Athens.
He accomplished his fellowship training in cornea in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, focusing especially on modern lamellar keratoplasty techniques and trained by the world famous innovator, Dr Melles. He has been also trained in eye banking at Amnitrans Eye Bank in the Netherlands. He is particularly focusing on modern endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK, DSAEK), anterior lamellar keratoplasty (DALK), amniotic membrane transplantations, limbal stem cells transplantations as well as the use of Femtosecond Lasers in cornea surgery. He has one of the longest DMEK-surgery series worldwide.
Since 2011, he has been working as a consultant cornea specialist at the Melles Cornea Clinic in Rotterdam, the Netherlands (www.niios.com), and since 2008 as a consultant ophthalmic surgeon at the Naval and Veterans Hospital in Athens. Dr Liarakos is the head of the Cornea Department at EYE DAY CLINIC.
Dr Liarakos is a Certified Fellow of the European Board of Ophthalmologists, a member of the Dutch Ophthalmic Society, a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the International Society of Refractive Surgery, the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery and various other international societies.
He is an author in more than 25 PubMed indexed articles and many Chapters in international reference textbooks. He participates as a speaker in most major American, European and other international congresses with more than 100 talks since 2007. He has organized / participated in multiple instruction / wetlab courses in the USA, the Netherlands, the UK, various European countries and Japan.
